Haikus speaks to the contrast between the possibility of intimacy and correctness that is based on the institutional culture. This work is based on my everyday journaling. I write my reflections on my everyday encounters. I use my writing as a tool to study the possibilities of bringing private into the public. In my process, I started a practice of keeping some parts of writing and masking the rest. During this process, the writing become more and more abstract and gained the qualities of poetry. Alongside this process, some compositions gradually stood out and became visible to me, short and simple compositions that speak about the moment, similar to Haikus. These compositions, include both visible and invisible text.
Furthermore, I selected a group of these compositions in order to create Graffiti on the walls of the corridors of Emily Carr University. I aimed to leave these marks on the walls of Emily Carr University as the institution, wherein I spent most of my days at the time. These Haiku-like compositions were shaped through my everyday lived experience within the corridors of this institution. The font I chose for this work is relatively small and by choosing a pale and foggy colour, my goal was to avoid dominating the space. I didn’t want my voice to be loud. Here, I present some of the works of this series.
